  Main Objectives
bulletYou should be able to discuss:
bulletthe different things we learn about a star from its spectrum
bulletwhat features of a star's spectrum are used to decide its spectral class
bulletYou should know:
bullethow the amount of radiation emitted by a star depends on its temperature and its area
bulletwhich spectral classes are cool stars and which are hot star
bulletYou should understand:
bulletthe apparent magnitude scale for classifying stellar brightness
bullethow absolute brightness magntiude is defined and how the unit parsec is defined
bullethow we can use apparent magnitude and luminosity to find out how far away a star is
Monday Exam on Chapters 3, 4, and 5.

Outside of class: Read Chapter 11. Go over Chapter 11 review questions. Complete Questions to Ponder 1, 7, and 11 to be turned in on Thursday.

Thursday Discuss stellar luminosity and the brightness magnitude scales.  Discuss classifications of stars based on stellar spectra.

Outside of class: Read Chapter 12 section 1-3 and 5-7. Go over review questions related to material we discussed in class today. Do Chapter 12 calculations 2 and 4 to be turned in on Thursday of next week.  Be sure to explain how you arrived at your answer to these questions.
