  Main Objectives
bulletBe able to describe Ptolemy's model of the solar system.
bulletBe able to discuss pre-Greek astronomy.  This includes knowing which civilizations left records of astronomical observations, which observations they mad, and why they might have been interested in them.
bulletBe able to give the contributions of each of the Greek astronomers and philosophers that we discuss. 
bulletBe able to explain the three criteria by which we judge scientific models and to apply the criteria to our two solar system models.
bulletYou should be able to explain what parallax is and what role stellar parallax played in early models of the solar system
Tuesday No class due to Monday/Tuesday switch day.
Thursday Discuss early astronomical discoveries and the solar system model proposed by Ptolemy.  Discuss the three critieria for a scientific model.  

Outside of class: Read Ch. 1 Sec 5, Ch. 2 Sec 1-3 and handouts.  Complete Questions to Ponder 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 16.  Turn in the questions that are underlined on Tuesday of next week.
