You should be able to explain how Kepler's third law can be derived from the law of
gravity. (in words, not math)
You should be able to define the following terms:
kinetic energy
potential energy
escape veloctiy
wave
frequency
wavelength
blackbody
thermal radiation
You should know:
the relationship between frequency, wavelength and wave speed
how the total amount of radiation emitted by a blackbody depends on its temperature and
its area
what the graph of energy versus wavelength looks like for a blackbody
how the peak of that graph changes with the temperature of the blackbody
the numerical value of the speed of light in a vacuum
whether a red star or a blue star is hotter and be able to explain why
why our eyes observe color only for very bright stars
why a red object looks red
how the temperature of an object is related to the motion of its molecules
You should be able to name several kinds of electromagnetic waves and list them in order
of highest to lowest wavelength
You should be able to explain why we divide electromagnetic waves into groups according
to wavelength and what property all electromagnetic waves have in common
Tuesday
Exam on the Progogue, Chapters 1 and 2, Sec. 1 of Chapter 3,
and Sections 1- 4 of Chapter 6.
Outside of class: Read Chapter 3 sec. 5-6 and
8-9. Complete Calculations 2 and 3 for practice (not turned in). Complete
review questions 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 and 28 to be turned in on Thursday.
Thursday

how Kepler's laws may be derived from Newton's laws. Introduction to energy
concepts. Introduction to waves. Discussion of different kinds of
electromagnetic waves.
