Week 14

 

  Main Objectives

 

bulletYou should be able to answer "Trivial Pursuit" type questions about the planets, such as, "Which planet is the largest?",  Which planet is rotates backwards?", "Which planet is the least dense?", etc.
bulletYou should be able to write a paragraph describing the distinctive features of each planet and its major moons (if any).   This means complete sentences -- not a list of facts.
bulletYou should be able to explain what determines whether or not a planet has a particular type of gas in its atmosphere
bulletYou should know the relationship between the temperature of a gas and the speed of the molecules
bulletYou should be able to discuss the greenhouse effect and its relationship to the temperature of Earth and Venus.
bulletYou should be able to discuss the differences between the compositions of the Jovian and terrestrial planets.
bulletYou should be able to discuss the dynamo effect explanation of planetary magnetic fields and give evidence for and against it.
Tuesday Overveiw of the solar system with emphasis on planetary atmospheres.  Begin discussion of individual planets.

Outside of class:   Read all of Ch. 8 and section 1 of Ch. 9. 

Thursday Coontinue discussion of the planets.

Outside of class:   Read Ch. 9 sec. 2-4 and Ch. 10.  Complete the odd numbered Recall Questions for Chapter 8 to be turned in next Tuesday.
