You should be able to describe how the basic kinds of telescopes are made.
You should be able to define the following terms: diffraction, chromatic aberration,
refraction.
You should know what determines the diffraction limit of a telescope.
You should be able to explain:
how a mirror or lens forms an image
what causes refraction and chromatic aberration
why all large optical telescopes are now reflecting telescopes
why large telescopes are better than small ones
Tuesday
No class due to Monday/Tuesday switch day.
Thursday
Illustrate basic optical principles: reflection, refraction,
image formation, focusing of light. Begin discussion of types of optical telescopes.
Discuss instruments used with optical telescopes.
Outside of class: Read
Chapter 5 sections 5-8. Complete Ch. 5 questions to ponder 4 and 10 to be turned in
next Thursday.
