Begin to develop a feel for the world energy picture:
Which countries use lots of energy per person and which use little?
What are the primary sources of energy?
How is energy use divided amount different uses such as transportation, residental,
commercial, etc.
How has energy use changed over the centuries?
Historically, what has been the relation between energy production and energy
consumption in the US?
Be able to discuss some techniques that cartoonist use to get their readers to think
about societal issues.
Understanding how to read information from graphs and how to make graphs
Monday
Introduction to course.
Outside of class: Read the course
syllabus, the "To the Student" part of the Preface and Chapter 1. Answer
questions 13, and 19 at the end of Chapter 1.
Wedensday
Discuss Chapter 1 and do group exercise on editorial cartoons.
Outside
of class: Read the handout on the Tragedy of the Commons. Complete web
assignment which will be made in class.
Friday
Discuss web assignment. Review procedures for making graphs.
Complete discussion of Chapter 1 including the article on the tragedy of the
commons.
Outside of class: Read Ch. 2 Sections 1-4. Do review
questions for Ch. 1 if you haven't already done so. Do Ch. 1 question 11.
