PHY 121 Week 2

  Main Objectives:
Be able to convert from one kind of unit to another.
Be able to define speed, velocity, and acceleration.
Be able to relate rates of change to graphs.
Given the acceleration of an object be able to predict its velocity at a future time.
Be able to state Newton's laws of motion.
Be able to apply Newton's laws of motion to everyday phenomena such as the need to wear seat belts in an automobile.
Be able to define work, power, efficiency, kinetic energy, elastic potential energy, and gravitational potential energy.
Be able to discuss conversions of energy from one form to another. 
Be able to explain what is meant by the term "conserved".
Be able to convert from one kind of energy units to another.
Monday Discuss article on Tragedy of the Commons.  Lecture on speed, velocity and acceleration.

Outside of class: Read Ch. 2 Sec.5 and 6.  Do Ch. 2 questions 1, 3, and 7.

Wednesday Lecture on Newton's laws of motion.

Outside of class:   Read Ch. 2 Sec. 7-9.  Do questions 9, 15, and 17.

Friday Introduction to basic energy ideas.

Outside of class: Read Ch. 2 Sec. 10-13.  Do questions 27, 29, 30, 34, and 46.
