Main Objectives:
 | Be able to convert from one kind of unit to another. |
 | Be able to define speed, velocity, and acceleration. |
 | Be able to relate rates of change to graphs. |
 | Given the acceleration of an object be able to predict its velocity at a future time. |
 | Be able to state Newton's laws of motion. |
 | Be able to apply Newton's laws of motion to everyday phenomena such as the need to wear
seat belts in an automobile. |
 | Be able to define work, power, efficiency, kinetic energy, elastic potential energy, and
gravitational potential energy. |
 | Be able to discuss conversions of energy from one form to another. |
 | Be able to explain what is meant by the term "conserved". |
 | Be able to convert from one kind of energy units to another. |

Discuss article on Tragedy of the Commons. Lecture on speed,
velocity and acceleration. Outside of class: Read Ch. 2 Sec.5 and 6. Do
Ch. 2 questions 1, 3, and 7. |

Lecture on Newton's laws of motion. Outside of class:
Read Ch. 2 Sec. 7-9. Do questions 9, 15, and 17. |

Introduction to basic energy ideas. Outside of class: Read Ch.
2 Sec. 10-13. Do questions 27, 29, 30, 34, and 46. |
