PHY 121 Week 7

  Main Objectives:
Waves
Definition of waves
Properties of waves (definitions and applications, such as refraction being used to explain how prisms work and applications of scattering to why the sky is blue)
Understanding what causes refraction
Relationship between speed, wavelength and frequency
Speed of light in a vacuum is 3 x 108 meters/second.
Particle Model
Why was the particle model introduced
Describe the particle model
Be able to find the energy of a photon or its frequency given the other one
How can light be both a wave and a particle
Electromagnetic Radiation
What causes electromagnetic radiation
Be able to list the types in order of wavelength and give a brief description of each
Discuss thermal radiation curve and how it is related to the temperature of the object
Temperature Inversion
What is it and why is it a concern
Monday Lecture on electromagnetic waves.

Outside of class:   Review for Monday's exam on Chapters 3, 4 and 5. (Today's discussion of electromagnetic waves will not be on the exam.)

Wednesday Exam II on Chapters 3, 4, and 5

Outside of class:  Read Chapter 6 Sections 1-2. Do Ch. 6 homework questions 1, 2, and 5.

Friday Complete discussion of electromagnetic radiation.

Outside of class: Read Chapter 6 Sections 3-6.  Go over Ch. 6 review questions.  Do Ch. 6 homework questions 8, 11, 21, 23, and 36.
