PHY 121 Week 9

Main Objectives:
All the objects for global warming were on the Week 8 sheet.
Be able to explain the difference between the terms temperature, heat and thermal energy
Be able to define pressure.
Be able to discuss some properties of objects on which thermometers can be based.
Be able to convert between the Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin temperature scales.
Know what specific heat is and be able to use it to calculate changes in temperature
Be able to define the units calorie and BTU
Be able to describe the assumptions of the kinetic theory of gases
Be able to use them to explain common events such as the pressure in your automobile tires increasing when they get hot
Be able to explain how the temperature is related to the kinetic energy of its molecules
Know the relationships between volume, pressure and temperature for an ideal gas
Monday View "After the Warming" Part 2.  Please make a special effort to arrive in class on time.  We will start the video promptly at 9:30.

Outside of class:  Complete reading already assigned.

Wednesday Discuss film and articles, concentrating on the scientific evidence that global warming exists, the effects of global warming, and actions we can take to mitigate the problem.

Outside of class:  Read Ch. 8 pages 192-200.  Go over Chapter 7 review questions.  No additional homework questions are assigned for Chapter 7.

Friday Begin discussion of thermal energy.  Discuss the kinetic theory of gases as an example of scientific model building.

Outside of class:  Read Ch. 8 pages 212-217.  Complete homework questions: 12, 14, 17, and 20.
