Well I waited, and no one jumped in, so the answer is easy. We are adding vectors graphically, so the vectors get drawn to scale using a ruler and protractor. When finished, the sum vector's length is measured, and the scale is used to find the value it represents. The direction is measured with a protractor, and referenced to the axis used for the measurement. We will learn to add them mathematically in the next chapter.
