Week 13

  Main Objectives
bulletBe able to define reflection, refraction, diffraction, and Doppler effect.
bulletBe able to discuss the principle of superposition
bulletUnderstand how standing waves are produced
bulletBe able to predict the wavelengths and frequencies of standing waves produced on strings and in air columns
bulletBe able to qualitatively discuss the process of Fourier synthesis
bulletBe able to solve problems relating to the interference of waves from two sources
Tuesday Discuss (with lots of demonstrations) properties of waves such as reflection, refraction, diffraction and Doppler effect.

Outside of class: Read Ch. 21 Sec. 1-5.   Complete Ch. 21 workbook exercises 1 and 3. Activ Physics 10.8 will help you understand the Doppler effect.  Complete Chapter 20 homework problems 22, 26, 35, 36, 54, and 56 for Thursday.

Thursday Discuss interference of waves and standing waves.

Outside of class:  Read Ch 21 Sec. 6-8.  Complete Ch. 21 workbook exercises 7, 9, 15, and 16.  Activ Physics 10.4 and 10.6 have some nice video clips in them that will help with understanding beats and standing waves. Complete Ch. 21 homework problems 4, 23, 30, 61 and 77 for Friday.

Friday Finish discussion of standing waves and discuss Fourier synthesis

Outside of class: Read Ch. 22 Sec. 1-3.  Complete Ch. 22 workbook exercises 4-7.  Complete Ch. 21 homework problems 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, 19, 24, 47 and 68 for Monday.
