PHY 181, Fall, 2006

Week 15

  Main Objectives
bulletBe able to discuss the history of our understanding of the electron including the experiments performed by Thomson and Millikan
bulletBe able to give brief descriptions of alpha and beta radiation
bulletBe able to describe Rutherford's experiment and explain what was learned from it
bulletBe able to explain how Compton's experiment supported the particle theory of light
bulletBe able to describe the photoelectric experiment and its results in detail.  In particular, be able to explain what the wave theory of light predicted should happen and how the particle theory of light was able to explain what did happen
bulletBe able to explain the Bohr theory of the atom and to use it to explain atomic spectra
bulletBe able to calculate the wavelength of a particle given its momentum and vice versa
Tuesday Discuss electric fields,Thomson's experiment, and blackbody spectra.

Outside of class:   Complete Ch. 37 workbook exercises 13, 16, 20, 22.   Read Ch. 38 sections 1-3.  Begin to review for Friday's exam.

Thursday Discuss the photoelectric effect, the Bohr model of the atom, and atomic spectra.

Outside of class:   Complete your review for tomorrow's exam.

Friday Exam V on Chapters 20, 21, 22 (sec 1-4 only), and 37 (sec 1-7 only).

Outside of class:  Read Chapters 38 sections 4-7 and 39 sections 1-6.  Activ Physics 17.3 will help you understand the photoelectric effect.   Complete Ch. 38 workbook exercises 6, 13, 14, 32, 33, 35, and 38.  Complete Ch. 39 workbook exercises 1, 6, 7, and 9. Complete Chapter 38 homework 1, 7, 8, 11, 17, 27, 29, 44 and 59  to be turned in on Tuesday.
