PHY 182, Spring, 2005

Week 3

  Main Objectives:
  • Be able to state the first law of thermodynamics
  • Be able to apply the first law of thermodynamics to the solution of problems - particularly those involving P-V diagrams
  • Be able to state the second law of thermodynamics.
  • Be able to discuss entropy in terms of its connection to order and disorder, probablilities, and reversible versus irreversible processes.
  • Be able to explain what is significant about the Carnot cycle.
  • Be able to calculate the efficiency of an engine.
  • Be able to explain the difference between the thermodynamic efficiency of an engine and the actual efficiency.
  • Be able to explain what we mean when we say that a refrigerator is an engine working in reverse.
  • Be able to explain what is meant by thermal pollution and how it is related to the second law of thermodynamics.
Tuesday Continue to discuss the second law of thermodynamics in the context of heat engines..

Outside of class:  Read the rest of Ch 19, but skip pages 586-589.     Complete workbook exercises 8, 10, 11, 17, and 19.

Thursday Discuss refrigerators and Carnot engines.  Practice problems on heat engines

Outside of class:   Complete Ch. 19 homework: 1, 5, 19, 22, 24, 40, 46, 52, and 57.  (Due Friday)

Friday More practice problems on heat engines and review for exam.

Outside of class: Review for the exam.  I highly recommend that you practice with Activ Physics 8.8, 8.9, 8.10, 8.11, 8.12 and 8.14 in addition to reviewing your workbook and homework problems.
