PHY 182, Spring, 2005

Week 5

  Main Objectives:
  • Be able to calculate the electric field produced by discrete charges and continuous charge distributions.
  • Be able to discuss E-field pictures qualitatively
  • Be able to describe the motion of charged particles in an electric field.
Tuesday Continue to think about forces due to charged particles.
Qualitative exerices on electric forces and fields.

Outside of class:   Read Ch. 26 Sec. 1-3 and handout material on calculating electric fields for continuous charge distributions.  Do Ch. 26 workbook exercises 3, 5, 7, and 9. Complete   Ch. 25 homework: 20, 23, 27, 63, 66, and 68.  (Due Thursday)

Thursday Practice in groups thinking about directions of electric fields produced by continuous charge distributions.  Begin to practice calculating the electric field due to continuous charge distributions.

Outside of class:  Read Ch. 26 Sec. 4-7.  Do workbook exercises 16, 18, 19, 26, 27, 33, and 34.

Friday Continue to practice calculating electric fields
Consider the motion of single particles and dipoles in constant E fields

Outside of class:   Complete Ch. 26 homework:  6, 11, 12, 18, 25, 27, 36, 45, 48,and 52. (Due Tuesday)  .
