Week 2 Assignments

Main Objectives for Week:
- Calibrate a standard balance
- Practice changing between grams and milligrams
- Practice reading scales
- Develop a procedure for measuring mass in grams
- Understand what a scientist means by the "uncertainty" in a measurement
- Be able to use uncertainties to decide if two measurements are definitely the same,
possible the same, or definitely different

| Monday |
Finish 2.7 by using your balance to check whether your predictions
are correct. Complete 2.9, 2.10, 2.15, 2.16, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5.
Experiment 3.5 is very important. Do it carefully. Carelessness here will
affect your measurements for the rest of the semester. Outside of class: Complete
3.6 and 3.7 in your notebook before Friday. Do homework problems 2.1 and 2.2 to turn
in Wednesday. |

Lecture and demonstrations on basic energy concepts. Outside
of class: Read the handout on energy. |
| Friday |
Complete 3.8, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5. Outside
of class: Complete 4.6 and 5.1A in your notebook. (Part of the
instructions in 5.1A tell you to discuss your answer with the your partner.
Obviously you can't do that until you come back to class.) Complete homework
problems 2.8, 3.1, and 4.1 to be turned in Monday. |
