PHY 101 - Meeting #3

Topic(s) Forces that are not constant:
  • Circular motion and its cause
  • Projectile motion
  • Torque and center of mass
  • Newton's law of universal gravitation
  • Gravity near and far away from the earth's surface

Reading List Pages 56-96
Objectives
  • Understand what is meant by uniform circular motion (UCM)
  • Know the direction of the acceleration of an object moving in UCM
  • Realize that the centripetal force is a net force, not an identifiable external force -- some identifiable force causes UCM
  • Be able to qualitatively describe projectile motion
  • Realize that an object's horizontal and vertical motion are independent
  • Use the idea of "NARANG" (on page 66) to simplify the description of projectile motion
  • Understand the difference between stable, unstable and neutral equilibrium
  • Describe what is meant by an "inverse square law force"
  • Define Newton's law of universal gravitation in words and as an equation
  • Recognize that the value of "g" is determined by the size and mass of a celestial object
  • Define what is meant by the term "gravatational field"
